Strydom is a middle-order batsman who can hit the ball a long way. Constantly ignored by the selectors even after scoring heavily in domestic cricket, Strydom was named in the squad finally for the series against Kenya. He had a poor series and was found wanting for lack of foot work. His batting is one dimensional and has no intention of rotating the strike. In 2006, Zimbabwe toured West Indies, Strydom failed yet again but was persisted for the Bangladesh series. He scored a run-a-ball 58 in the 4th match and helped his side seal the series 3-2. Thus prolonging his career a little longer, a poor Champions Trophy in 2006 and even worse tour of South Africa, made the selectors look elsewhere.

Strydom struck 128 and 104 in a first-class game against Manicaland which included 16 sixes, and only Andrew Symonds and Jim Stewart have hit more sixes in a first-class game.
