Eddie Dawson's batting wasn't crowd-pleasing but he did his job with precision, day in and day out. A product of Cambridge University, he represented Leicestershire in First-class cricket and over a domestic career spanning 12 years, amassed over 12000 runs. Dawson's biggest quality was his concentration and ability to play the ball on merit for long periods. This enabled him to blunt the opposition bowlers to dust and then encash his patience for runs when the bowlers were tired. Dawson's Test career was extremely short, playing just the five Tests for England with only a solitary fifty to show but his exploits for Leicestershire made him a respected batsman in the country. It's England's loss really, that Dawson couldn't have a distinguished career in Tests. Apart from being a rock-solid batsman, he also had a top cricketing brain and was an astute captain at all levels. Dawson did duty during the Second World War as a Coldstream Guard in Sussex.
