With this, the current WTC cycle of matches comes to a close. Australia will now meet South Africa in June for the final, and what a match that promises to be. That's all we have for now though. Until next time, it's goodbye from Sagar Chawla on behalf of Venky and Pradeep Krishnamurthy.
Smith collects the Warne-Murali trophy, shakes hands with Karunaratne once more, and then joins his teammates. Last time Australia won a Test series in Sri Lanka was in 2011. Lyon had spoken about wanting to be ruthless before this Test, and how they want to be known as a great team. They had missed out in 2022 where they lost the second Test after winning the first. But this time they got the job done in comprehensive style. Their spinners, led by Lyon himself, outbowled their counterparts, and the batters made the difference with first-innings runs in both Tests.
Steven Smith | Australia captain: It was a really good series. We played really well from the outset. The way the batters were able to adapt was outstanding. All of our bowlers did a terrific job, Mitchell Starc included. And the spinners went to work. We had a really good training camp in Dubai before coming here. All of our batters bat differently. Usman and Carey like to sweep a lot, me and Marnus use our feet. It's been really fun. We've got such a great group here. I really enjoy captaining in this part of the world. All the movements you need to make, the intricacies involved. I thought Alex played exceptionally well. That partnership obviously helped us set up the game.
Dhananjaya de Silva | SL captain: Very disappointed. Losing home series 2-0 is very disappointing. These conditions are very suitable for us. We haven't had opportunities to get into the game. Aussies proved why they are finalists. We haven't done well in first innings, whether bowling or batting. 260 isn't enough. Losing four wickets in an hour isn't going to help. The consistency - they put the ball everytime in the same place (talking about Aus spinners). Very hard to score as a batter.
Steven Smith is the Player of the Series..
Alex Carey, Player of the Match: Congratulations to Dimuth. Outstanding career. Josh went down with a bit of a back spasm so I was elevated up the order. Platform was set up by the boys up the order. And Smudge again was outstanding in this innings, showing his class. I think the wicket allowed for that as well - some expansive shots. It was a good wicket when the ball pitched on the good stuff. It's fun (wicket-keeping). Kusal did a great job as well. We've got some quality spinners in our lineup, always good standing behind the stumps.
Dimuth Karunaratne: Yes I am (emotional). It's a long career. I was spending so much time with my friends, so I'm emotional leaving them. But wherever I go, I will always be supporting them. When I started to play Test cricket, that was my one goal to play 100 Tests and scoring 10000 runs. I'm happy the way I am today. Want to thank everyone who supported me in my career. Going to Australia now to learn those coaching levels. Want to stay with my family - have missed spending a lot of time with them. Would like to thank all the fans who supported me whether I was doing well or not. My teammates - happy faces all the time. This is cricket - you have to go one day. This is the time for me.
Time for the presentations.
Mitchell Starc - Absolutely, we try to win every series, playing away from home is one of the challenges for every team, Nathan (Lyon) has done it last time (on winning in Sri Lanka), but we haven't won in these conditions so often. A few things the group will like to tick off, but it's been a surreal experience for a few players, a fair bit of success (as a unit), we looked at this series and WTC (final) going down the line. It's a good problem to have (on the player depth), we're playing some good cricket, preparing ways to combat every situations, (Playing in) England will be different, we haven't played South Africa for a while, they've done well to make it to the final and it'll be a good test. We have been together for a while (on the bowling group) - Pat (Cummins) and Josh (Hazlewood) weren't part of this series, Boland didn't play in this series, but Nathan and Mitchell (Kuhnemann) did extremely well. We'll enjoy this series win, a couple of new guys have joined us and we'll celebrate this, was the first tour for Connolly, they'll only gain from such wins. The WTC final is the next red-ball game for us, we have been there in the past and we've got to know it well (as winners). The conditions will be different and the Duke ball will be used, that's something we the pacers would love. I have been glad to play a role in this series, leading the new-ball attack (all by himself) has been some change, but the spinners have done a lot of work. I did my part by creating those footholes for them to exploit (smiles)
It was another comprehensive performance from the visitors in this second Test. Having bowled out Sri Lanka for 257 after losing the toss, they posted over 400 on the board thanks to a sensational 259-run stand between Smith and Carey which set up the match for them beautifully. Both of them struck superb hundreds on a dry and turning pitch, and dominated the spin trio of Sri Lanka who were left without answers. They guided Australia to a first-innings lead of 157 which was always going to be very difficult to overcome. Sri Lanka did fight hard with the bat in the second innings, with Mathews and Mendis scoring fifties, but Lyon and Kuhnemann were persistent and got the job done eventually as they both took four-fers.
11:46 Local Time, 06:16 GMT, 11:46 IST: Australia seal the series 2-0. They congratulate each other on the balcony before walking out to shake hands with the opposition. Dimuth Karunaratne takes a stump as a souvenir as his Test career comes to a close. He finishes as only the seventh player to play 100 Tests for Sri Lanka, and easily has the most runs as an opening batter for them. Smith and Co wait outside the boundary while Karunaratne walks off for one final time.
Karunaratne to Labuschagne, 1 run, there's the winning run! Innocuous delivery on the pads, Labuschagne works it through square leg and ambles through for a single before sharing a hug with Karunaratne who hangs his boots from Test cricket
