Bumrah, Suryakumar and Boult star as MI win a fifth on the bounce

Mumbai Indians continued their charge towards the IPL 2025 Playoffs with a commanding 54-run win over Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium, a result that provisionally lifted them to second place in the standings. It was a night of milestones for MI: this victory marked their fifth in a row and their 150th win in IPL history.

Blistering half-centuries from Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav powered MI to 215 before Jasprit Bumrah (4-22) and Trent Boult (3-20) took over in the second innings, delivering MI's first-ever league-phase win over LSG.

Where was the game won?

In the middle overs. At the halfway mark of the chase, LSG needed 112 from 60 balls with Mitchell Marsh and Ayush Badoni well-set. But Trent Boult's double strike, dismissing both Marsh and Badoni, broke the back of the chase. Boult's two overs cost just nine runs and left LSG with too much to do. It was also in this phase that MI, despite losing a few wickets in their batting innings, never allowed the scoring rate to dip, keeping the pressure firmly on LSG.

PowerPlay: Rickelton races off the blocks

The spotlight was on Mayank Yadav's return after Rishabh Pant won the toss, but it was MI's openers who set the tone. Rohit Sharma took on Mayank early, pulling him for a pair of sixes before falling to a 120.8kph wide slower ball, edging to short third. That was LSG's only breakthrough in a PowerPlay dominated by Ryan Rickelton. The left-hander, who survived an early run-out chance, blazed to 49 off 24 balls, taking down Prince Yadav with a six and two fours, then punishing the spinners - pulling Ravi Bishnoi for six and hammering Digvesh Rathi for two more in a 19-run sixth over, the most the young spinner has conceded in an over this season.

Middle Overs: Suryakumar carries the baton forward

Rathi made amends for his expensive PowerPlay by removing Ryan Rickelton for a 32-ball 58 with a wrong 'un that gripped off the surface. But LSG's hopes of clawing back ran into the Suryakumar Yadav wall. The MI vice-captain kickstarted his innings by lofting Mayank over mid-off and slog-swept Ravi Bishnoi for six in the next over. He tore into Bishnoi again, smashing another six and two fours, even as Prince Yadav gave LSG some relief by bowling Will Jacks for 29. Bishnoi ended his spell with Tilak Varma's wicket, but Suryakumar continued to dazzle, improvising a hook over fine-leg after premeditating a scoop. He also became the third-fastest to 4000 IPL runs, behind only Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers in balls faced.

Death Overs: Dhir, Bosch flourish take MI to 215

MI's finish stuttered initially as Mayank Yadav bowled Hardik Pandya, but Naman Dhir injected momentum with back-to-back fours off Prince Yadav. Suryakumar launched his fourth six to bring up a 27-ball half-century but fell immediately after, driving Avesh Khan straight to extra cover. Corbin Bosch, replacing the injured Mitchell Santner, struck a six and a four off Digvesh Rathi, while Dhir smashed another six to cap a second 19-run over off the young spinner. Dhir's unbeaten 25* off 11, including a last-ball six, powered MI to a formidable 215.

PowerPlay: Bumrah strikes early but Pooran, Marsh counter

Jasprit Bumrah set the tone with a brilliant first over, bowling three dots before dismissing Aiden Markram at deep square leg, a wicket that took him past Lasith Malinga's tally of 170 IPL scalps. Mitchell Marsh counterpunched with a six each off Deepak Chahar and Bumrah, but LSG managed just 40 in the first five overs. Nicholas Pooran then shifted gears, smashing Chahar for two sixes over point and another over deep mid-wicket to lift LSG to 60/1 at the end of the PowerPlay.

Middle Overs: Jacks, Boult strikes dent LSG

LSG's hopes of taking the chase deep took a major blow just one ball after the PowerPlay as Will Jacks had Nicholas Pooran holing out to long-off. Jacks struck again two balls later, with an out-of-sorts Rishabh Pant reverse-sweeping his second ball straight to short third. Marsh tried to steady the innings with successive boundaries off Hardik Pandya, while Ayush Badoni launched a 20-run assault on Karn Sharma with two sixes and a four. But just as LSG threatened a comeback, Hardik reintroduced Trent Boult, who struck immediately, a slower short ball inducing a mistimed pull from Marsh. Boult then dismissed Badoni with another slower short ball sliced to point, snuffing out any remaining LSG hopes.

Death Overs: Majestic Bumrah closes it out

The 16th over shifted the focus of the game to MI's victory margin and its impact on their Net Run Rate. Bumrah produced a low full toss that David Miller flicked straight to deep mid-wicket. The star pacer then bowled Abdul Samad and Avesh Khan off successive deliveries, one with a slower ball, the other with a pinpoint yorker. A hat-trick and a third IPL five-fer narrowly escaped him, but Bumrah's 4 for 22 fired the five-time champions back into the Playoffs positions.

What's next for the teams?

MI head to Jaipur to take on a struggling Rajasthan Royals on May 1. LSG have a week off and will be in action only next Sunday, when they'll travel to Dharamsala to take on Punjab Kings.
