In the heat of the run-chase against Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians retired out Tilak Varma, who was batting on 25 off 23. Five balls into the penultimate over from Shardul Thakur, the MI batter was swapped out for Mitchell Santner, with 24 runs still to get from 7 deliveries. MI went on to lose the game as Avesh Khan defended 22 off 6 balls.

"It was obvious that we needed some hits and he was not getting... in cricket, one of those days come when you really try but it does not happen. I think the decision speaks for itself why we did it," Hardik Pandya said after the defeat.
This is the fourth instance of a batter retiring out in the IPL. Ravichandran Ashwin was the first to be retired out while playing for Rajasthan Royals in 2022. Coincidentally, that too came against LSG - in Mumbai. In the 2023 season, PBKS retired out Atharva Taide against Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala and Gujarat Titans did it with Sai Sudharsan against Mumbai Indians in Ahmedabad.
