A feisty bowling all-rounder, Symcox was known for his capable off-breaks and some beefy lower order batting. A late bloomer, Symcox debuted for South Africa at the age of 33 and was part of a relatively strong line-up under Hansie Cronje. An opener at the start of his career, Symcox later became an orthodox off-spinner who could bat a bit. A stagnating career at Kimberley was rescued when he went to Durban to practice his craft.

Symcox relied more on guile and variation rather then sharp spin. With South Africa boasting a strong bowling line-up, Symcox was left to play the ideal support role, a task which he did to perfection. Symcox batting was an added bonus for the team as he showed himself more then capable with the bat. He scored his maiden Test ton, a fine 108 against Pakistan at Johannesburg in February, 1998. Batting at No.10, he rescued Pakistan from a wobbly 166/8 adding a record 9th wicket partnership worth 195 with Mark Boucher.

In a career lasting 20 Test matches, Symcox managed 37 Test wickets and 741 runs. His ODI career was better though, he played 80 ODIs and was often used as a pinch-hitter at the top of the order. His best knock came in one such role, an aggressive 61 against India in Sharjah, 1996.

Since his retirement, Symcox has served as a commentator for various channels with his most recent assignment being the Cricket World Cup held in the sub-continent in 2011.
