Mahwire became the first player to represent Zimbabwe from the Masvingo area. During his school days he was a batsman who could bowl but once he attended the CFX Academy, he turned it around and became a fast bowler who could be useful bat lower down the order. He made his Test debut against Pakistan in 2002 at Harare, though he did not impress in the first few outings he was recalled for the series against Australia in 2003-04.

He was given plenty of opportunities to prove himself but could not do so. In May 2004, his action came under the scanner but with the help of Kevin Curran he rectified it and became more side-on. With mediocre outings against New Zealand and India, Mahwire was dropped. He also was the players spokesperson during the dispute with the board in 2006.

Mahwire also has a level 2 coaching certificate and played first class cricket in Zimbabwe for Southern Rocks till 2011.
